Abstract


The problem of the research are â?? can the use of concrete objects improve the ability
of first grade students of SDN 3 Sumbergedong in operationalizing addition and subtraction in
mathematics?â?. As for the purpose of this study is to describe the ability of students in
operationalizing addition and subtraction with the help of concrete object. In this study as a
research subject is the first grade of academic year 2013/2014.The first half with a number of 24
students, consisting of 11 male and 13 female.. Courage in asking students and expressed the
opinion that in the first cycle only or a score of 25%, in the second cycle increased to 75%. As
well as on indicators of motivation and excitement in the following study, the first cycle got an
average score of 50%, but in cycle both increased to 80%, hich means an increase of 30%.
Indicators of cooperation in the discussion group also experienced a very significant increase,
from an average score of 40% in the first cycle increased to 75% in the second cycle, which
means an increase of 35%. The same percentage increase in the indicators of cooperation within
the group occurred in indicators of interaction with fellow students during the learning process,
from a score of 45% in the first cycle increased to 80% in the second cycle, which also means an
increase of 35%. Based on the results of research and discussion it can be concluded that
learning by using tools concrete objects around the school can improve the ability of students in
grade 1 in operationalizing addition and subtraction with numbers up to 20%
